The police in Calabar have arrested a 20-year-old boy simply
identified as Godwin Odu, for allegedly killing one Boniface Odinaka, a
student of Army Day Secondary School, 3 Amphibious Brigade, Eburutu
Barracks, Calabar.
It was gathered that Odinaka, who was the Labour Prefect of the above-named institution, was reportedly attacked for seizing the sandals of another student, identified as Francis Etim, and was stabbed to death by the culprit.
Odu was said to have engaged the services of Odu who was his friend and an alleged cult member.
The suspect, who hailed from Akwa Ibom State, is currently being detained at the state Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Diamond Hill, Calabar.
Asked why he killed Odinaka, Odu said his friend, Francis Etim, had begged him to assist him recover a pair of sandals, which the deceased confiscated over alleged improper dressing.
On how he was able carry out the mission, Odu said they laid ambush on Odinaka at the school gate waiting for the closing hour, and carried out the act alongside Etim when students were returning home after dismissal.
In a statement at the Homicide Unit of the state CID, Odu confirmed
that he attacked Odinaka from the rear and as the SS II boy struggled to
free himself, fight broke out, which resulted to his death.
Minutes after Odinaka was killed, Etim fled the area, but he was later arrested.
Fielding questions from the Officer-in-Charge of Homicide, Mr. Joseph Inuyashe, DSP, Odu said: “The boy Odinaka is the cause of everything that has brought me here. My friend, Francis Etim, came from school and told me that one senior student seized his sandals and I went with him to attack Odinaka.”
The suspect, who was identified as a dropout, said he attended Government Technical School, Ikot Ansa, Calabar, said he abandoned his studies after he discovered that “some bad boys were after me.”
Odu, who pleaded that he was still a minor, stated that he was only 14 years old, but later reversed his claims after he was asked on when he started his primary and secondary education, as he later said he was 20 years old.
