Coming up with a hit is hard, coming up with a follow up hit is harder.
Many artists never have the opportunity to make lightning strike in the
same place again. Today we look at the most recent top 5 One Hit Wonders
in Nigerian music.
1) Soul E – In
2007, Soul E’s debut single ‘Soul E Baba Dey Here’ gained him attention
in the music scene. The success of the song had many tagging him as the
next 2Face Idibia. His feature on 2Face’s ‘E Be Like Say’ off his sophomore album Grass To Grace helped
fuel this belief. 6 years after and Soul E has not been able to
generate a hit as big as his debut single. His marriage to Queen Ure and
separation has further compounded his woes. He has released a couple of
singles in 2013 but none as catchy as his debut.
2) Bigiano – Bigiano kicked
off his solo career in 2008 with a monster hit ‘Shayo’. In 2008 and 2009
there was hardly any party or club this song wasn’t played in. When he
dropped his album in 2009, no song on the album could duplicate the
effect ‘Shayo’ had. Shortly after, Bigiano moved
to the United Kingdom. He came back to the country last year and has
released a new bunch of singles, one actually features Wizkid. None of the singles have hit the mark.
3) MP - Former JJC & 419 Squad
member MP released his hit single ‘Pasa Pasa’ in 2008. His sleek
demeanor and cool approach to music garnered him a lot of fans. The
success of his song got him a Next Rated nomination at the 2009 Headies.
He lost the category to Omawumi and it seems that loss zapped his
confidence. MP went back to the UK and hasn’t been heard from ever
since.
4) Dee Bee- One of the
surprise hits of 2008 came from a relatively unknown act called Dee Bee.
The song took everyone by surprise that no one even knew the artist
behind the song until the video came out. The song which featured former
9ice associate Sparkle burned the dance floors for 2
years. Somehow Dee Bee has not been able to churn up another hit of that
magnitude. With each passing day he slips further and further away into
the land of one-hit wonders.
5) AY.Com- The year 2008
again! Former Terry G pal and associate AY.Com blindsided the music
scene with his infectious street love song Pass Me Ur Love featuring Terry G.
The song took AY. Com from obscurity into stardom. As the song
continued to rise, a little bit of controversy came up as AY.Com felt
that Terry G was holding him back by performing the song at shows
without his concert. Thanks to the drama, both acts went their separate
ways. Terry G has gone on to have a successful recording career while
AY.Com has…you know the rest.
